When you purchase a SilkType font, you are buying a license to use the font, not ownership of the font itself.
Different licenses allow different types of use, such as print, web, logos, social media, broadcast, or templates. Most real-world projects use more than one medium, which means multiple licenses are often required.
You may use the font only in the ways described by the license(s) you have purchased. You may not share, resell, or redistribute the font files, or allow others to access them.
If you’re unsure which license you need, or if your project changes over time, you can always upgrade or contact us for guidance. This agreement exists to protect both you and the work that goes into making the fonts.
The legal text below defines these rights and responsibilities in detail.
This End User License Agreement (“Agreement”) is a legally binding contract between you (“Licensee”) and SilkType (“Licensor,” “we,” “us,” or “our”).
By downloading, installing, accessing, or using the font software provided by SilkType (“Font Software”), you agree to be bound by the terms of this Agreement. If you do not agree, you must not use the Font Software.
For the purposes of this Agreement:
The Font Software is licensed, not sold.
SilkType retains all right, title, and interest in and to the Font Software, including all intellectual property and copyright. No ownership rights are transferred under this Agreement.
Licenses are usage-based, not ownership-based.
Each license grants limited rights for specific uses only. Any use not expressly permitted under the applicable license requires the purchase of an additional license or written permission from SilkType.
A single Project may require multiple licenses.
All licenses are non-exclusive, non-transferable, and non-sublicensable unless explicitly stated otherwise.
All licenses granted under this Agreement are perpetual, meaning they do not expire and do not require renewal, provided that the Licensee remains in compliance with the terms of this Agreement.
The scope of each license is limited to the specific use, medium, quantity, and conditions described in the applicable license and on the invoice at the time of purchase.
If the Licensee’s use expands beyond the scope of the purchased license, an additional license must be obtained.
The Desktop (Print) License grants the Licensee the right to install and use the Font Software on the licensed number of Workstations for the creation of static, non-interactive designs.
The Licensee may use the Font Software to create:
The Desktop License does not permit:
The Web License grants the Licensee the right to embed the Font Software on a single Domain using approved web font technologies.
The Licensee may:
Use is limited to the maximum number of monthly pageviews purchased. The Licensee is responsible for monitoring usage and upgrading the license if limits are exceeded.
The Web License does not permit:
The Logo License grants the Licensee the right to use the Font Software to create a logo, wordmark, or trademark for a single brand or legal entity.
The Licensee may:
This license applies only to the logo itself. Any additional use of the Font Software requires the appropriate license(s).
The Logo License does not permit:
The Social Media License permits use of the Font Software in social media content.
The Licensee is responsible for selecting the appropriate license tier based on reasonably accurate information available at the time of purchase. If actual usage materially exceeds the licensed tier, the Licensee must upgrade the license accordingly.
Including but not limited to:
This license does not permit:
For the purposes of this Agreement, social media use includes both organic and paid content distributed within social media platforms, including but not limited to Meta (Facebook, Instagram), TikTok, LinkedIn, and similar services.
Use of the Font Software in video content published and promoted exclusively through social media platforms falls under the Social Media License, regardless of campaign size or advertising spend.
Social Media Licenses are priced based on the number of followers associated with the social media account(s) on which the Font Software is used.
The applicable follower tier is determined at the time of purchase and is reflected on the invoice. Temporary increases in reach due to paid promotion do not, by themselves, require an upgrade, provided the content is distributed exclusively within social media platforms.
The Broadcast License permits use of the Font Software in broadcast and large-scale video media.
The Licensee is responsible for selecting the appropriate license tier based on reasonably accurate information available at the time of purchase. If actual usage materially exceeds the licensed tier, the Licensee must upgrade the license accordingly.
Including:
This license does not permit:
Broadcast use refers to video content distributed through television, streaming services, cinema, or other broadcast channels outside of social media platforms.
Use of the Font Software in broadcast advertising, streaming commercials, cinema advertising, or similar large-scale distribution channels requires a Broadcast License, even if the same content also appears on social media.
Broadcast Licenses are priced based on the estimated campaign reach, as determined by the distribution method, platform, or media plan.
The applicable reach tier is selected at the time of purchase and is reflected on the invoice. If the campaign is distributed across multiple channels, the total combined reach must be considered when selecting the appropriate license tier.
The Template License permits use of the Font Software in templates sold or distributed to multiple End Users.
The Licensee must ensure that:
The Template License does not permit:
Except where explicitly permitted (such as logo outline modification), the Licensee may not modify, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, or create derivative works from the Font Software.
Under no circumstances may the Licensee sell, rent, lease, lend, sublicense, distribute, or otherwise make available the Font Software or any part thereof.
This Agreement shall terminate automatically if the Licensee breaches any term.
Upon termination, all use of the Font Software must cease, and all copies must be deleted.
The Font Software is provided “as is,” without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, SilkType shall not be liable for any damages arising from use or inability to use the Font Software, including but not limited to loss of profits, business interruption, or data loss.
If any provision of this Agreement is held to be invalid, illegal, or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.
SilkType shall not be liable for failure or delay in performance resulting from events beyond its reasonable control, including acts of God, natural disasters, war, labor disputes, governmental actions, power failures, or internet outages.
This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Iceland.
Any disputes arising from this Agreement shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts of Iceland.
